Painting Tip - Order of Painting March 17, 2007

This question has come up time and again. It is of course not absolutely important to follow this order, but it helps. Just don’t paint yourself into a corner….
The correct order of painting will ensure a proper job and saves a lot of time and energy (and headache).
The recommended order is :
- 1. Ceilings
Always start with the ceiling. If you leave that to the last, you may have splash marks of your ceiling paint on your newly painted walls. Finsh the ceiling proper before starting on the cornices.
- 2. Walls
Paint the edges and borders first. When possible, work downwards from top to bottom. For walls with windows, finish painting the areas above the window before working on the areas below.
- 3. Windows and Doors
Paint the edges and work inwards and downwards. Masking tapes (there will be another post on masking tape soon) will come in handy here. Mask the walls and parts such as hinges and knobs before the actual painting.
- 4. Floors
Finally, complete with the floor. If at all possible, leave it to the absolute last. Let the paints on the walls, ceilings, doors and windows dry first. Let the electrician, the gas man, the SCV man, the aircon man…. finish their jobs first. Otherwise, you may have to clean up or repaint after their job is done. (I will post on floor coating - epoxy and others - in another post.)
Minor Note: For those who are into saving on equipment and has only 1 brush for the entire house, work on the water-based latex paint first. BTW, you know you are just saving a few bucks!
Till next tip….
