Paint is basically a liquid material containing pigments which when applied to objects solidifies.

It has 3 main functions: paint red 1. Protection We use paint to protect against corrosion, rust, weathering, stain etc. We paint our wood surfaces to prevent rot. Protection is a very important function of paint. 2. Decoration This is usually done with colours and texture. 3. Communication In many instances, we use paint to convey a message. An example is in painting in red the water pipes that serve the fire hoses. Roadline paint are in various colours for the same purpose of communication. Paint consists of the following components:

a. Binder - forms a coherent film, adhering to substrate, binding hte pigments at the same time b. Pigments & Extenders - gives paint its colour, its opacity, its weathering properties, its gloss c. Solvents - serves to transport the paint to the substrate, while controlling its viscosity and flow d. Additives - Added for features such as anti-fungus and anti-fouling
